Ask Mary: Hard time praying

Hi Mary,

I am a freshman in college. At home I had personal devotions and family prayer. Now I only pray a few times a week. What do you suggest?

Dear freshman,

Don’t be discouraged. In college you will discover your own walk with God. I suggest starting simple. Read the Lord’s Prayer in the morning (Matthew 6:5-15) and “The Lord is my Shepherd,” (Psalm 23) at night. I am confident that the Holy Spirit will help you from there.

Psalm 119:105 (NKJV) “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.”

Ask Mary: I am angry with God

Hi Mary,

Hi Mary, I am devastated that my wife left me. I was also laid off from my job of 25 years; as a result I lost my house. I am really angry at God for letting all of this happen to me.

Dear Angry Husband,

I understand the pain that you are experiencing. Remember that God wants us to come to him openly; he can handle our anger. He will give you answers if you are willing to listen. Read about David (Psalm 22) and Job (Job 40-42) to encourage your heart.

Ask Mary: My husband is having an affair

Hi Mary,

My husband has been in an affair for 2 years. He does not want to get a divorce, but has not given up the other woman. I want to be faithful to my vows, but do you think that I can realistically save my marriage?

Dear Faithful Wife,

Marriage counseling may be helpful. I also recommend the book “The Power of a Praying Wife.” Find the support of other women; you never know what is possible until your hear the stories of what God has done to restore other marriages. Read Psalm 125, and 127.
