A fellow sufferer and graduate of DTS. Thank you for your honesty, transparency, and for providing a true look at what this looks like. It is both spiritual and emotional, and physical and all of those things. but mostly debilitating. Sadly one cannot just SNAP OUT OF IT. Christians often shoot their wounded when it comes to this one. I think because of fear. They don't know what to do with the one who is depressed. Your friend had the right idea. Just be there. Your words will provide much healing and understanding of a complex disorder. Again, Thank you.

I have been going through a severe depression after serving as a missionary for 4 years in Japan, seeing God meet my every need (including bringing my 2 cats to Japan) and blessing my time there, to coming to Thailand, to where I have often thought He has removed His hand of blessing from me, and I will never experience His goodness and favor in my life. I have often believed it is His will that I be miserable the rest of my life. Our emotions change but God does not. I thank you for sharing this. I will pass on that I stay away from churches that preach a prosperity gospel. I went to one church, where they rebuked me and "declared healing in Jesus name," saying I don't have depression any more. This teaching is heresy. People can be like Job's 3 friends. Like your article said, it is best to seek help, but surround yourself by friends who will just be there for you...sometimes that's all we need. Tom Nelson's chapel message was also very helpful.

I am the sister Julie refers to in this article and I want to commend her on her bravery to write about her depression. I know she feels sometimes like I was the "stronger sister" but please know I admire her for seeking the help she needed. It's heartbreaking to see someone you love suffering and even worse not to be able to fix it. Being the oder sister, I wanted to fix it. I tried to fix it. I couldn't fix it. I made plenty of mistakes during this period in her life and reading this article has helped me learn how to support others suffering from depression. Please, if you or someone you know is suffering, please seek help. Those who truly love you will always love you. In fact, I love Julie more!

Wow. Thank you Julie for your real and genuine portrayal of your struggle with depression. As you mention, part of the problem with Christianity is that we are not open and honest with each other. By way of your honesty, you have exposed everyone's secretive hurts and pains - the kind we bury because someone may label us with a spiritual deficit. You not only paint a vivid picture of brokenness, but you also provide a picture of beauty and healing that can result from seeking help. I commend you for your willingness to share your story, and I know others will also feel a sense of relief to know they are not alone. Indeed, you are gorgeous and brave.

I am currently very depressed. My wife of 5 years has moved out & left me. She tells me there is no chance of us ever getting back together. I don't want to believe that & constantly I pray to God to restore our marriage. We have been separated 2 months now & already I've lost over 20 pounds from not eating. I'm not getting the support from my church family & basically I'm left all alone. Nobody has come to give me comfort or support or even called. Right now, I could use a loving arm around me. Or someone to hold me while the tears pour from my eyes or to cry with me. Even just the caring presence of someone who would at least try to give me some kind of comfort. Anything! But I am all alone. My wife has left, my parents have passed on, all my brothers & sisters live over 1750 kilometers away, & my christian family has seemingly deserted me. I too have asked God, please Lord, just take me now. The pain I feel is just too hard to bear. At 53 years old, life seems over. God help me!

The Lord healed me from depression... and He told me He would lift me up..I knew from that moment on whenever I started feeling down, He would come lift me up.. Thank you for sharing your story... It's sad how people treat you once you are diagnosed with depression, if they find out about it. I'm so glad God doesn't treat us like a stepchild, but readily wraps His big arms around us, and comforts us. :-)
